How To Activate Voice Control On Iphone 4

With Voice Control on your iPhone, you can do a number of things with your phone, such as play music, call people, and even ask your iPhone the time.

1. Press and hold the Home button tmpB107_thumb or press the Center button attached to the right earbud of your iPhone headset for about two seconds to start Voice Control.

2. Speak your command. We show you the various commands you can speak in the next sections.

3. After you speak your command, the iPhone will repeat it briefly and execute the command it thought it heard you say.

TIP: If you are using your headset microphone for Voice Control, just let the microphone dangle from your ear normally, don't pick it up and hold it closer to your mouth. Holding the microphone too close will distort your voice and Voice Control will not understand you correctly.

List of Voice Commands

There are a number of commands you can use with your iPhone to control music, the phone, and more.

TIP: If you have your iPhone inside a protective case and you are having trouble with Voice Control, make sure your case is not interfering with the microphone on the iPhone. Try removing the case and using Voice Control; see if the iPhone without the case works better than with it.

General Commands

There are a few general commands you can use on your iPhone.

Say: "What time is it?" to hear the current time.

Say: "No, Nope, Cancel, or Stop," or tap the Cancel button to exit Voice Command.

Say: "Help" to get help about how to use Voice Command.

Phone Voice Commands

It is much safer to use Voice Command while you are driving to dial people from your IPhone.

CAUTION: Voice Command will not always clearly understand you, especially if you are speaking in a noisy environment. Beware that it may end up dialing the wrong person.

ALSO, if Voice Control is set to English, it is more likely to have trouble with French or Italian names that are properly pronounced. Just be ready to press the End call button in a hurry if it starts dialing the wrong person.

Say: "Call Elizabeth" to call Elizabeth from your Contacts list. If you have more than one Elizabeth, you will be asked to clarify.

TIP: For very common names such as John or Susan, you should use both the first and last name for that person. You can also edit contact entries for people you call a lot and add in a unique nickname for those people.

Music and Video Commands

There are quite a few music commands. Because you may be using your headphones to listen to music, you should remember that you can start Voice Command by pressing and holding the Center button on your right headphone cord.

Say: "Pause or Play" to pause or play the currently playing song or video. Say: "Play songs by U2" to play all songs by the band U2. Say: "Play artist Enya" to play songs by Enya.

TIP: If a song or artist has the word "the" in the name, be sure to include it when you say the complete name of the song or artist, including the word "the."

Say: "Next song" or "Next track" to play the next song. Say: "Previous song" or "Previous track" to play the next song.

TIP: Remember you can double-click the Center button to go to the next song and triple-click it to go to the previous song.

Say: "Shuffle" to turn on shuffle.

Say: "Genius" or "Play more like this" to turn on the Genius feature and play similar songs.

Say: "Play (name of album)" to play the entire album. Say: Play (name of playlist)" to play the playlist.

Changing the Language for Voice Control

You can change the language for Voice Control in your Settings app.

1. Tap the Settings icon.

2. Tap General.

3. Scroll down and tap International.

4. Tap Voice Control.

5. On the next screen, you will see a list of languages. Tap any language to select it. You know a language is selected because it has a check mark next to it. English (United Kingdom) is shown as selected.

6. Tap the International button in the upper left corner to return to your settings.
